Ceramic braces are clear tooth colored brackets introduced in 1986. The name originates from the Greek word “KERAMIKOS”. Ceramic braces either have semi-translucent ceramic brackets, which are better for white teeth, or tooth-colored ceramic, which is better for slightly darker teeth. Either way, they blend in well and well suited for Adults and children
Some of the benefits of ceramic braces include;
- They are less noticeable
- Improves smile and gives more confidence to the individual
- Discreet and blend with teeth color
- It strongly resists staining from food and other discoloration
- It’s less painful and doesn’t irritate the gum
- They are of high quality as they don’t break or chip easily
- It’s been found to move teeth faster than clear plastic aligners
The drawback of ceramic braces is that it is slightly more expensive than the average cost of metal braces
What happens once the ceramic brace is fitted?
After the fit we schedule each appointment every 6-8 weeks to check the progress of the brace, carry out dental cleaning and adjust the wire as necessary. You may have some slight discomfort as the teeth move towards the desired final position which would also serve as an encouragement itself. The treatment time for each individual does vary but the average time is 12 to 24 months. At the end of the treatment, we will fit you with a retainer. This is an invisible, removable appliance which helps to keep your teeth in their new position. Sometimes we will fit you with a fixed retainer; further information about this will be given to you at platinum dental surgery
Is it Uncomfortable?
Having the ceramic braces fitted isn’t uncomfortable; after each orthodontic appointment you may find your teeth may become sensitive and there may be slight discomfort as the teeth begin to move, however, it’s transient and symptoms pass within a few days. Pain meds may be prescribed to you if this happens.
